What is Grief Prevention?
Automatic Protection for Your Builds
Grief Prevention is a plugin that allows players to protect their builds and items from griefing. When you place a chest for the first time, a small claim is automatically created around it. Claims are only enabled in the Overworld (Survival world) and cannot be created in the Nether or End.
Earning Claim Blocks
You earn claim blocks passively while playing. You start with 100 blocks and
earn 100 blocks per hour of active playtime.
The maximum amount you can accrue from playtime is 80,000 blocks.
Use /claimslist to check your balance.
Creating Claims
Golden Shovel Required
To create or resize claims, you need a golden shovel. Craft one or obtain it from the server. Right-clicking with the golden shovel allows you to define claim corners.
Equip a golden shovel in your hand
Right-click on one corner of the area you want to claim
Walk to the opposite corner of your desired claim area
Right-click again to set the second corner and complete the claim
Visualizing Claims
When holding a golden shovel or a stick, you can right-click on the ground to see claim boundaries. Gold blocks mark corners, and glowstone outlines the edges. Claims extend from bedrock to sky limit, so only the surface boundaries are shown.
Trust Commands
Share access to your claims with friends using different trust levels. Stand inside your claim when using these commands.
/trust [player]
Full Trust
Gives a player full build access. They can place blocks, break blocks, open containers, and use items in your claim.
/accesstrust [player]
Access Trust
Allows a player to use buttons, levers, beds, and other interactable blocks. They cannot build or access containers.
/containertrust [player]
Container Trust
Grants access to chests, furnaces, and other containers. Also includes access trust permissions.
/permissiontrust [player]
The highest trust level. This player can give trust to others and manage permissions in your claim.
/untrust [player]
Remove Trust
Removes all permissions from a player in the claim you're standing in. Use
/untrust all to remove all players.
/trustlist
View Trust
Shows a list of all players trusted in the claim you're standing in and their trust levels.
Public Trust
You can use public instead of a player name to allow all players access. For
example,
/accesstrust public lets anyone use buttons and doors in your claim. Use this
carefully!
Managing Claims
/claimslist
Lists all your claims with their locations, sizes, and how many claim blocks you have available.
/abandonclaim
Deletes the claim you're standing in. Your claim blocks are returned to you for use elsewhere.
/abandonallclaims
Deletes all of your claims at once. Use with caution — this cannot be undone!
/trapped
If you're stuck inside someone else's claim, this command teleports you out. Has a cooldown to prevent abuse.
Resizing Claims
Hold your golden shovel and right-click inside your existing claim to see its boundaries
Right-click on a corner block (marked with gold) to select it for moving
Right-click on the new location where you want that corner to be
Subclaims
What Are Subclaims?
Subclaims are smaller claims inside your main claim with different trust settings. This is useful for community projects where you want some areas to have different permissions than others — like a public shop area inside your private base.
Type /subdivideclaims to enter subdivision mode
Use your golden shovel to create a smaller claim inside your existing claim
Set different trust permissions for this subclaim
Type /basicclaims to exit subdivision mode and return to
normal claiming
Subclaim Permissions
Players trusted in the parent claim do NOT automatically have access to subclaims. Subclaims have their own separate trust lists. However, the owner of the parent claim always has full access to all subclaims within it.
Important Information
Claim Expiration
To keep the world clean for active players, claims may expire if you are inactive for too long:
- Chest Claims: Automatic chest claims expire after 7 days of inactivity.
- Unused Claims: Empty claims with no investments expire after 14 days of inactivity.
- Standard Claims: Built-up claims expire after 60 days of inactivity.
Pro Tip: Once you have accrued 10,000 total claim blocks, your claims will never expire due to inactivity.
Protection Details
- PvP: Combat is disabled inside player claims. You are safe from attacks while in your land.
- Mob Protection: Friendly mobs (Horses, Donkeys, Llamas) inside claims are protected from other players. Villager trading also requires permission.
- Explosions: TNT and Creeper explosions do no damage to blocks inside claims.
Troubleshooting
Make sure you're standing inside your own claim. Right-click with a stick to check claim
ownership. If the claim belongs to someone else, you'll need them to trust you with
/trust [your name].
You earn claim blocks over time by playing on the server. Use /claimslist to
see
your available blocks. You can also abandon claims you no longer need with
/abandonclaim
to reclaim those blocks.
Stand inside your claim and use /containertrust [friend's name] to give them
access to chests and containers. If they also need to build, use
/trust [friend's name]
instead for full access.
Claims automatically extend from bedrock (Y=-64) to the build height limit (Y=320). You only need to define the horizontal boundaries — vertical protection is automatic.
Explosion damage from creepers, TNT, and other explosives is prevented inside claims. Your builds are protected from all forms of grief, including mob damage and fire spread.
While players cannot grief inside your claim, they can still exist outside it. Consider expanding your claim if you need more protected space. Harassment or excessive camping may violate server rules — contact staff if needed.
